The History of Castle Wolfenstein 11:17 AM | Tuncer Deniz | Comment on this story
Erik Loyer, a professed longtime IMG reader, sent us a note about a new piece he has created called The persistence of hyperbole, which indirectly traces the history of the Castle Wolfenstein franchise from its original incarnation as the 1981 Silas Warner game for the Apple II through last year's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, soon to be released for the Mac by Aspyr Media. Within the piece, sounds and screenshots from Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein 3D, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are juxtaposed, along with archival recordings, marketing materials for the games, and 3D deconstructions of game graphics. The piece requires the latest version of Shockwave, and was produced entirely on a B&W G3 Mac and G3 PowerBook. You can see it at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's digital gallery, where it was launched yesterday.
