Hearthstone: Goblins Vs. Gnomes Lands This December
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has revealed plans for a new addition to the company's online card game: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Announced at the company’s eighth BlizzCon gaming convention, Goblins vs Gnomes is the first expansion for the game and will introduce over 120 new goblin- and gnome-themed cards for players to add to their collections.

“Goblins vs Gnomes is going to turn Hearthstone on its head,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “It introduces a ton of new cards with all-new options for decks and strategies, and we can’t wait to see all the crazy combinations players come up with.”

Goblins vs Gnomes immerses Hearthstone players in an epic rivalry between goblin engineers and their gnomish counterparts. Though wildly brilliant, these pint-size tinkerers don’t always have the upper hand on the mechanical contraptions they create, and the results can be wonderfully unpredictable. The new cards coming in the expansion are filled with wild and wacky inventions as well as some faces that will be familiar to World of Warcraft® and Hearthstone players.

Coming this December to PC and iPad®, Goblins vs Gnomes card packs will be winnable in the game’s Arena mode and purchasable with in-game gold or real-money at the same price as standard card packs. Specific details on launch timing will be announced in the weeks ahead.

StarCraft II: Legacy Of The Void - New Website, Beta Sign-Up
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, the upcoming continuation of the popular sci-fi RTS series. In addition to a new website the company is also offering interested players the chance to sign-up for beta testing. Legacy of the Void will follow the exploits of Hierarch Artanis as he prepares to liberate his homeworld of Aiur from the Zerg swarm before confronting the ancient evil Amon.

You are Hierarch Artanis, leader of the mighty protoss race. Years ago, your homeworld of Aiur fell to the merciless zerg Swarm. Now, at long last, you have raised a powerful fleet of warships known as the Golden Armada, and are poised to reclaim your world. But an ancient evil—Amon—threatens this destiny and the fate of the entire galaxy. Only you can reunite the protoss factions and defeat the coming darkness before it consumes all life in the sector.

When the First Contact War ended, Aiur had been conquered by the zerg Swarm. The protoss stood on the brink of oblivion, at risk of seeing their civilization disappear entirely. It was Artanis, a young executor, who prevented a bloody civil war and guided both the Khalai and Nerazim factions through the chaos of the Brood War. Now, with the Golden Armada at his command, he intends to take back Aiur and prepare his people for the final battle against an ancient and indomitable enemy.

In the early, glorious days of protoss civilization, the Conclave built magnificent arkships, self-sustaining vessels capable of supporting protoss culture through its most desperate times. Armed with legendary warriors and knowledge of aeons past, the Spear of Adun will be Hierarch Artanis's flagship in the fight against Amon.

Blizzard Reveals Overwatch
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 16 comments

Blizzard Entertainment recently announced its upcoming new game, set in an entirely new universe. Overwatch will offer "pick-up-and-play" first person shooter action, and feature a cast of new heroes for players to meet. Set on a technologically advanced future Earth the game will put players in charge of an international task force struggling to return peace to a war torn world.

“Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”

In front of a live crowd of more than 25,000 BlizzCon® attendees and an expected online audience numbering in the millions, Blizzard Entertainment today announced Overwatch™, a pick-up-and-play first-person shooter featuring an amazing cast of heroes and set in an all-new Blizzard game universe.

The action of Overwatch takes place in a technologically advanced, highly stylized future earth. In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch had come together to restore peace to a war-torn world. After many years, the group’s influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch might be gone now . . . but the world still needs heroes.

With an emphasis on accessibility and pure fun, Overwatch brings Blizzard’s signature easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay to the FPS genre. Harnessing the power of their hero of choice, players will join forces in teams of six and battle each other across a range of futuristic global locations, from the hologram-lit streets of London to a bazaar in the shadows of a high-tech Egyptian pyramid. Every battlefield is iconic and built to highlight each character’s unique abilities, and fights can shift from streets to rooftops to open skies within the span of a breath.

The heroes of Overwatch each bring their own distinct weapons and superabilities to bear. Here’s just a glimpse of the numerous heroes that will ultimately fill Overwatch’s rosters:

  • Tracer, a former British test pilot who shrugs at danger, can execute impossible acrobatic assaults thanks to her ability to teleport, drop energy bombs, and even reverse time.
  • Reinhardt, a hulking German soldier in battle armor, can charge great distances and pin his enemies to a wall or slam the ground with his rocket hammer to knock them off their feet.
  • Hanzo, a bow-wielding Japanese mercenary, has the ability to scale walls with his bare hands, fire off a tracking device that illuminates nearby enemies for his team, and unleash a huge spirit dragon that does grievous damage to all enemies in its path.
  • Symmetra, an Indian architech, manipulates light and energy to shield her allies and damage her enemies—and she can turn the tide of any battle by building a device that instantly transports her teammates to the front lines.
While each hero represents a formidable force on their own, players can amplify their potential by assembling into a well-balanced team and creatively combining powers. No matter which hero or playstyle they prefer, players will be able to team up and accomplish the incredible in Overwatch.

At BlizzCon, Overwatch was fully playable and running on 600 PCs, and attendees there were the first in the world to play it. Gamers at the show were able to select from a current roster of 12 playable heroes and go 6v6 against each other, capturing or defending points and attacking or delivering payloads across three wildly different maps. New heroes and maps will continually be added to the game as development progresses, and beta testing will begin in 2015.

Learn more about Overwatch, including all of the heroes and maps revealed at BlizzCon, and sign up to participate in the upcoming beta test at the official website. Further details about the game will be announced there in the months ahead.

Mac Gamer HQ Takes The MacBook Air For A Spin With Grid 2
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

Mac Gamer HQ has kicked off a new video series focusing on the gaming potential of the MacBook Air. The debut video shows how well the slim portable computer handles Feral Interactive's Grid 2 racing sim.

As always, the video is Gameplay only (no commentary), except that instead of using my default Mac Pro, I used my 13-inch, Mid 2013 MacBook Air. I recorded the first video of the series last night while playing Feral Interactive‘s Grid 2.

Obviously, the official Grid 2 Mac Gameplay Video looks better and gives you a better idea of how good the game can look on Mac OS X. But with this video, I don’t want to show off the best possible graphics, but show you how well a tiny MacBook Air can handle a demanding game.
