Blizz Devs Speak Out On Diablo III Patch 1.07
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has posted the results of a recent Ask the Developers Q&A for its fantasy action RPG, Diablo III. The answers focus on the upcoming 1.07 patch which will include a variety of changes and additions including dueling, class updates, crafting additions, monster power changes, monster affix changes, and other "quality of life" improvements.

Q. Can you explain with more detail on the restrictions that make it not viable to have a 2x2 duel system? Why it is not a feasible to add this to the game at the moment?

Kevin: 2v2 brawling is another form of team-based Deathmatch. The problems we had with depth and balance with 4v4 aren’t better at all with 2 people per side. It's not like we don’t like this idea, to be clear. Here's where we are right now: we want to get the basic player-vs-player combat to you all as quickly and as simply as we can. Brawling in the Scorched Chapel is that. As Jay said back in December, we will continue to ponder (picture Rodin's Thinker only with more foam axes, nerf guns, and beer) a way to add lasting depth to a team-based mode but, in the meantime, please enjoy beating the living daylights out of each other in free-for all combat.

Drox Operative Expansion Unofficially In Development
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | 1 comment

In a recent blog post Soldak Entertainment's Steven Peeler discussed current plans to develop an expansion for its starship action RPG, Drox Operative. The game puts players in the role of an elite starship captain and features warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.

This is still pretty much unofficial, but we are working on an expansion. Unofficial in this case just means that we could change our minds and work on something else instead. At this point in time there aren't any guaranteed new features or content, but it will most likely contain at least a new race, new monsters, new components, and new quests. We do have a bunch of cool features that we think are going to make the expansion a must buy for any Drox fans. We will start to talk about the specifics once things are implemented and working.

One of the nice parts about working on an expansion is that we will be actively working on Drox. This means that we'll continue to have fairly regular patches and a lot of the smaller changes that were originally meant for the expansion will likely show up in the main game also.

The Showdown Effect: Building A Click Fest From Clichés
6:00 AM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Computer and Video Games has posted a new preview of Paradox Interactive's The Showdown Effect, an upcoming 2.5D multiplayer action game inspired by 80’s and 90’s action movies "where champions from different eras of time fight to the death, for fun, for glory and for awesome." In the game players will battle for the upper hand using a variety of different weapons. The Showdown Effect will feature a multiplayer mode for up to 8 participants, multiple game modes, numerous heroes, and dynamic environments.

The Showdown Effect attempts to charm the pants off of players by playing up classic movie clichés. It opens with a bodacious (yes, we're bringing that back) electric guitar solo during the logo splash screen, and almost-obnoxious buttrock plays as you navigate the menus.

Hop into Neo Tokyo and you'll see Godzilla in the background punching down buildings and the character roster is a who's who of movie archetypes too, all played up to the ridiculous extreme. Dutch McClone is an Austria-born kindergarten teacher living in America, and yes, he sounds just like Schwarzenegger.

Sgt. Lance Koboldski is a long-suffering, undervalued beat cop. He's got his cheap gold watch and is ready to end his last shift before retirement, but ends up getting dragged into this ridiculous battle royale. There's also a wise old kung-fu monk that awkwardly stutters his way around the Engrish language. Our favourite, Mizu Ichiban, is Japanese school girl that alternates between 'I'm so kawai' and Gogo Yubari-type psycho.
