WoW Insider #8
1:35 PM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Blizzard Entertainment has released its latest World of Warcraft Insider. Issue #8 highlights recent WoW related updates including the revamped website and forums, the paid character transfer service, and a sneak peek at Jewelcrafting from the upcoming Burning Crusade expansion.

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade will introduce a lot of new features to expand the game in many interesting and fun ways. One of these additions is the introduction of a new profession: jewelcrafting. We have just released a brand-new page where you can get detailed information on the jewelcrafting profession and a first look at a related feature that will be introduced in The Burning Crusade: socketed items.

Jewelcrafters learn the art of creating beautiful jewelry and trinkets from metals and rare gems. By processing the raw ore mined from the various deposits and mineral veins, jewelcrafters can extract gems from the ore to use for their craft. Although miners sometimes find gems while gathering ore, jewelcrafters mostly rely on their prospecting skills to get more of the precious stones.

Flow in Games - A Thesis
1:34 PM | Eddie Park | 1 comment

An interesting project recently brought to our attention centers around an MFA thesis that seeks to apply Flow Theory to game design. Currently displayed in a site named Flow in Games by researcher Jenova Chen, the thesis attempts to, among other things, demonstrate that Flow Theory can be applied to games to create experiences for a wide range of gamers as well as non-gamers.

The goal for this site and Jenova Chen's MFA thesis research is to explore and develop different design techniques to enhance the Flow experience in video games. It includes genetic Flow design theories & processes, analysis of the existing games' Flow system and examples of how to implement Flow with these techniques.
Along with an explanation on Flow Theory as well as exposition on the thesis, the Flow in Games site features a web-based game titled flOw that implements Flow Theory, giving players an interesting experience:
As part of Jenova Chen's thesis research, flOw inherits an embedded design of active DDA (dynamic difficulty adjustment), players with differing skill levels can intuitively customize their experiences in the zone and enjoy the game at their own pace. "Addicting" is the most common word its fans use to describe it.
flOw has already won a few accolades, including Edge magazine's Internet Game of the Month for May 06 as well as a spot in the Experimental Gameplay Workshop at this year's Game Developer's Conference. Readers are highly encouraged to check out the unique experience it offers.

Burning Crusade Preview
1:34 PM | Cord Kruse | Comment on this story

Actiontrip recently posted a detailed preview of The Burning Crusade, Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming first expansion for World of Warcraft. The eagerly awaited Crusade will offer an increased level cap, two new playable races, and the addition of the entirely new continent of Outworld to explore.

We know that the upcoming content patch 1.12 has been dubbed the PVP patch. Blizzard is already promising improved world PVP, multi-realm Battlegrounds and other enhancements, but what the Burning Crusade expansion clearly needs to concentrate on is to better define the structure of PVP combat. The direction of the next content update shows that Blizzard is listening to their vocal community after all, at least to a degree. Likely, they are paying close attention to what Mythic is talking about implementing in WAR, PVP-wise. Here’s what World of Warcraft lead designer Jeff Kaplan had to say on the subject to Gamespot: “We're building a PVP objective into every new Outland zone for outdoor world PVP. They're different for each zone. Hellfire Peninsula actually has three objectives that are very close to each other. Picture an outdoor Arathi Basin that's always ongoing. We're going to have some other big announcements that have to do with the PVP system, but that will be closer to launch, so we're not ready to talk about that yet.”
