Mac Poker Expanding

In a press release on eMediaWire, online poker companies are jostling for Mac gamers to play poker, which has led to quite a few poker games released for the Mac this past year. Some of these such as World Class Poker and Poker Academy Texas Holdem 2.5 can be bought through retail, while others are based soley online like Mac Online Poker.
Although online Mac poker games might have been tough to find a year ago, today there are many companies competing for the lucrative Mac market. This means there is a very good selection of Mac compatible poker games now available. Please follow the links below to read the news release and to learn more information.
eMediaWire - Press Release
Websites such as http://www.maconlinepoker.com/ specialize in finding the best Mac compatible online poker software. The website has links to every popular Macintosh poker game available, and even offers some other interesting Mac links such as blackjack and video poker games.
The Mac poker market is considered to be a late bloomer, mostly because of the unexpected speed of the online poker boom. Most online poker rooms were struggling to keep up with their Windows poker software, let alone launch a Mac compatible game. Nowadays the Mac market is almost fully saturated, with only a small number of online poker rooms not offering a Mac and iMac compatible game. Rumor has it that one of the biggest online rooms ever will be adding Mac compatible software soon, but that remains to be seen.

Heroes V Review
1:19 PM | Anthony Wang | Comment on this story
NY Times has posted a review of Heroes of Might and Magic V. Developed by Nival, HoMM V brings a fresh new look to the Heroes franchise with 3D graphics, enhanced combat system, and features that were popular in the previous Heroes games.
Nival Interactive's turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic V is the kettle-cooked sour-cream-and-onion potato chip of video games. It's not the best game ever made, but once you start playing, it becomes almost impossible to stop. As the hours glide by you might tell yourself you will stop just as soon as your troops cross a guarded bridge, occupy a castle or find a magical artifact, but by the time a task is completed, another, just as pressing, has arisen. Once you finally reach the end of a mission you might decide to just play a few minutes of the beginning of the next level to see what it's like, and then play another four hours. Please click on the links below to read the review and to learn more information.

Gamasutra has postmortems from the developers behind Luxor, Mahjong Quest, and Fish Tycoon, all casual games that have made it to the Mac. In each of the postmortems, the developers behind each game look back at the other influences behind the game, development, and finally release.
Fish Tycoon - Swimming To Victory! Also, be sure to tryout Fish Tycoon before you buy at the Free webgames section at our MGS sister site. Please click on the links below to read the postmortems and to learn more information.
Carla Humphrey, Executive Producer for developer Last Day of Work, shared her experience with the fish-breeding simulation game Fish Tycoon. After the success of their game title Plant Tycoon, a real-time plant breeding simulation, they came up with Fish Tycoon as a derivative. “People love to have fish in their computers,” Humphrey said. They were aiming for everyone, because at the time they weren’t aware of the casual games audience.
The team scheduled for 6 months, since Fish Tycoon was already created for PDA and taken up by Big Fish Games. “Nine months later we realized it was less of a porting project and more of a complete rewrite,” said Humphrey. They had team of five and really no budget. They funded the game with revenue from past handheld games...

More? Well...there's a nifty death-o-meter that goes up when you blow things up. Bury the needle and you get a bonus.
Okay...uh, it has software-driven Ageia physics? It looks really, really cool? The vehicles blow up when they crash into each other, so you have to hit 'em fast before they hit each other! You click a lot. I mean, a lot. On tanks. I did mention the tanks, didn't I? Is that enough? It is? Download it. It's free; what have you got to lose?

Next Level Gaming recently examined the PC version of Introversion Software's Darwinia. The unique strategy games gives players the task of saving the Darwinians from the invading Viral hordes. Next Level gave Darwinia a score of 78%
From the review:
Almost everything about the graphics in this game reminds me of the movie Tron. The environments, the art style, but most of all the Engineers in the game are right from Tron. That being said, the graphics are not going to win any awards for realism, but they are definitely a nice brake from every other games art style, in fact I would say that other than my example of Tron I can think of no other game or movie that has used this style of art. The Darwinians will remind you of stick figures hobbling around in a 3D world drawn with green, brown and blue triangles. Your other units, like your Squads and Engineers, though they are more graphically impressive are still simple geometric shapes. In the end, I have to give this game some credit for their creativity with their art, if not the breathtaking polygon count. The Mac version of Darwinia is available from Ambrosia Software. To read the rest of the review click on the link below.
Next Level Gaming: Darwinia Review
Graphics are not what make a game fun, and this is one of those titles that prove this. The graphics in the game are not breathtaking, but the game is a heck of a lot of fun to play. The game itself is not that challenging and will not leave you banging your head against the wall from hours of repeating the same jump or level over and over again. This is one of those games that you can play through without loosing once. Darwinia is a great game to pick up and play for 20 or 30 minutes here and there, but you will probably not loose yourself in the world for hours on end. This means it is a great game for the causal gamer or for the hardcore gamer to slip between some of their heavier titles.

UT 2004 Map Installer Now Universal
6:07 AM | Evan Holt | 1 comment
Resteware has updated their map installer UT2004Grabber and sync utility UT2004Sync for Unreal Tournament 2004 to Universal Binary.
When you play Unreal Tournament 2004 on servers where you have to download a map to your computer, Unreal Tournament stores them in a 'cache' folder. As you download new maps, older cached maps are deleted. Using UT2004Grabber you can now add the temporary items such as maps, textures, static meshes, music, sounds to your permanent list so that you will not have to download them in the future.
Resteware has also released an update to their handy sync tool called UT2004Sync which allows you to sync your current maps with others on the network. This is handy for LAN games, where you want to make sure that everyone has the same set of maps before you start to play.
Both UT2004Grabber and UT2004Sync are universal binaries and are free to download from Resteware's web site using the link below.
