World of Warcraft Beta Site Prepped 8:13 AM | Andy Largent | Comment on this story
Blizzard has launched the community site for World of Warcraft in preparations for the beta of this upcoming massively multiplayer online (MMO) title. The site will contain news about the beta, as well as pertinent game information, online forums and support. Their plan to distribute the massive files in the beta is to use the new BitTorrent-based "Blizzard Downloader" system to ensure no one server gets overloaded. After the initial download rush subsides, they will also then put up download links for those testers who are unable to use BitTorrent: To ensure that your system works with the Blizzard Downloader, please try downloading the World of Warcraft Cinematics: Sneak Peak or the Gryphon Ride Movie. If you encounter any problems, please check the BitTorrent FAQ or contact wowsupport@blizzard.com for help.A fraction of our testers, who are behind firewalls, will not have access to the BitTorrent download method. If you fall into this category, an alternative download method will be made available to you within a few days of the initial Blizzard Downloader release. Head over now to check out the beta site and stay tuned for announcements as the testing begins, which the company says is "just around the corner."

IMG Reviews the Altec Lansing MX5021 8:21 AM | Johan Hansén | Comment on this story
IMG's Tim Morgan has taken a closer look at the high-end computer speakers MX5021 from Altec Lansing. The speaker system is aimed at choosy audiophiles that are willing to pay a higher price for a higher sound quality. From the review: Getting on with things, let’s answer the all-important question: How does the system sound? To put it simply — the system shines. The satellites have a wonderful clarity that I have not experienced in any other computer audio setup, and the frequency response is superb. The crossover between the satellites and subwoofer is the envy of other systems: I can’t even tell the sub is a separate component. The unity of sound between the speakers and sub is seamless. The folks behind the ScummVM project have recently announced the release of version 0.6.0. The update brings with it compatibility with all LucasArts/LucasFilm adventure games. In addition, the classic title Flight of the Amazon Queen has been released as freeware. Improvements to the 0.6.0 version include new graphics modes and tweaked sound effects. In addition, support with the following titles has been added: - The classic V1 versions of the original LucasArts SCUMM games Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken and the LucasArts SCUMM game 'Full Throttle'
- Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2. Many thanks to Revolution for providing us with the source-code to these games.
- Support for Flight of the Amazon Queen. Thanks to Steve and John for providing us with the source code to this game, and permitting its release as freeware.
For those unfamiliar with the project, ScummVM allows users to run titles based off the SCUMM scripting utility, which was used to create a host of adventure games in the past.
