IMG Looks At Mac OS X 10.3 'Panther'
3:05 PM | Jason Sims | Comment on this story
Today's the big day! Mac OS X 10.3 'Panther', the latest major upgrade to Apple's next-generation operating system, ships today. Some people who pre-ordered the upgrade received it earlier this week already; for those who didn't, it will be available as early as 8 pm this evening at a Mac store near you.
IMG has posted a detailed look at some of the many cool features in Panther. A short excerpt follows...
What's really exciting about Mac OS X is that it has made possible all kinds of new innovations. Version 10.2 "Jaguar", the previous major release of Mac OS X, delivered such forward-thinking features as Rendezvous, which allows you to do things like chat and share your music across a network without having to do any configuration at all, and Quartz Extreme, which frees up a bunch of CPU power by offloading a lot of the work of the Quartz 2D graphics engine onto your graphics card.Follow the link below to read the full article.

Panther continues this tradition, with such tricks up its sleeve as ExposÚ, which allows you to find any window you're looking for in a big messy pile of them in a couple seconds, or sweep all windows out of the way and let you see your desktop, putting everything back where it was when you're done.

Aspyr Releases Jedi Knight II Update
9:31 AM | Johan HansÚn | Comment on this story
Popular Macintosh game publisher Aspyr Media has released a patch to the Star Wars-based first person shooter Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. The update fixes a number of things, such as improved compatibility with some third party modifications.
List of changes:
Fixed KP_EQUALS in the key binding. To download, head over to MacGameFiles.com. To install the update, just replace the old applications with the two included in the download.

Fixed "invalid enumerant" error when running on an older version of the Mac OS with older ATI drivers.
Holding down the shift key when launching the game will now prompt for a command-line.
Users with one-button mice now have the option to map ctrl-clicks as the second mouse button. This is useful mainly for the force-powers configuration screen in the multiplayer app, where right-clicking subtracts force points. To change this setting, hold down the option or command keys when launching the multiplayer app.
Mac JK2 didn't tolerate buggy 3rd party mods very well. Loosened this up a bit, and as a result the Dark Forces mod should now work properly if placed in the regular mod location of ~/Library/Application Support/Jedi Knight II
Fixed crashing issue when automatically downloading custom maps in the MP app.
Fixed sporadic crashing when loading a level.

Brad Custer Posts Panther Desktop
9:31 AM | Johan HansÚn | Comment on this story
With the upcoming release of MacOS X 10.3 Panther from Apple this evening, Brad Custer have created a new Panther themed desktop wallpaper for you all to enjoy.
Brad comments on his creation:
Well, unless you've been under a rock, then you know that Panther will be unleashed today. I wanted to celebrate the release of this OS and since it just happened to fall on my Friday update then the timing was perfect. Also, I've had the honor of using the new OS for a few days now and I must say it's worth all the hype. So, with the help of Apple and their PR department, I was able to create this week's wallpaper. I simply entitled it "Evolution" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. :)To download the Panther-flavored theme in your preferred resolution, head over to Custer's Desktops with the link provided below.

New UT2004 Preview Posted
9:31 AM | Trevor Buchanan | Comment on this story
The folks over at Gamesradar.com have posted an interesting preview of the next in the series of Unreal games from Epic, Unreal Tournament 2004. Here's a bit of what they had to say:
Here's the problem with UT2004. It's clearly the best Unreal game that Epic have ever made. But with no great technological leap, and what appears to be a cynical appropriation of Battlefield 1942's and Planetside's vehicles, it's going to have to fight to prove its worth. Follow the link below for the full preview. They've also got some nice screenshots on hand for your perusal.

Let Mark Rein, Epic's Vice President, try: "Everything about this game is improved, so if you loved UT2003, then you'll love UT2004. If you skipped 2003 because it didn't appeal to you, then you're coming back. This game literally has it all. There's Onslaught, which is an awesome game mode with a whole bunch of new stuff. And UT2004's Assault mode is much better than the original Unreal Tournament Assault; it plays much better online."
