MJ Addresses Myth III Moves

IMG reported yesterday that many of the Myth III: The Wolf Age team members recently found themselves without work. Now, citing "a change in developmental focus," MumboJumbo have confirmed the closure of their Irvine, California office in an update to their web site.
While the update suggests that "many of the Myth III team members" have been offered relocation to Dallas, "Burger" Bill Heineman said that he and Chris Jacobson have returned to Contraband Entertainment, even while completing work on the Mac version of Myth III.
According to the update - and confirmed by a post from MacSoft's Nate Birkholz in our forums - the Mac version is still on track. Here's a clip from the MumboJumbo page:
The Macintosh version of Myth III is in final testing but has been held up due to some Mac OS-X specific issues. We want to give all of our fans the best possible experience on every platform and expect to have these issues ironed out shortly. When we do, we will be releasing Macintosh versions of both demos as well. We want to thank all of our Mac fans and MacSoft in particular for being so patient during these last few weeks.You'll notice mention of two demos for Myth III. The team is working on getting a second demo out for the PC soon which focuses on the single player, to complement the first demo, which was multiplayer only.

All of us here at Inside Mac Games would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Tuncer Deniz, IMG's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, on the occasion of his marriage in Calgary, Alberta last Saturday to Maria "Mimi" Mancilla of Venezuela.
(The IMG business office is operating on a reduced schedule this week, so inquiries may not be answered as promptly as usual. But rest assured, Tuncer will be back up to speed next week.)

Survivor Goes Gold

MacSoft have announced that, just one week after the PC version shipped, the Mac version of Survivor: The Interactive Game, based on the "reality-based" television series, has survived development and been declared final. It will ship to retailers in December.
Here's the description of the game from MacSoft's press release:
The first release in the Survivor series of interactive games announced by MacSoft, an Infogrames Inc. label, was developed for the Mac by alt.software. The inaugural edition features the real-life casts from the first two Survivor television series - Pulau Tiga and Australia - and incorporates many of the exciting elements from the show including the infamous Immunity Challenges and Tribal Council.MacSoft's web site describes the game as requiring Mac OS 8.6 or higher, a 350 MHz G3 or faster, 64 MB RAM, and an ATI Rage 128 or better.
In Survivor: The Interactive Game, players may choose cast members from the first or second season or create their own character. When creating a character, players must allocate points across ten different skill categories. The strategies deployed must compliment the skill sets of a player, as they will greatly impact the player's ability to survive the Tribal Council and nature's elements.
Once the game begins, each player chooses a role or task to complete, such as cooking, hunting, fishing or fire tender. The decisions made will affect the players standing within the group and can either hurt or help when Tribal Council arrives. At Tribal Council, players will get the opportunity to vote off other remaining survivors and experience all of the rituals featured in the television.

This is my all time favorite twitch game. I actually bought a Robotron 2084 machine so I can play it in my spare time. The sheer amount of destruction was able to satisfy my need for explosions.
Quake 3 Arena
I didn't really like this game. I preferred the single player game of Quake 2 or SiN Gold. The deathmatch factor for me is just getting boring. I want to play something with puzzles and more challenges instead of kill kill kill.
Myth III: The Wolf Age
An honorable prequel to the Myth saga. It's amazing how the game can take the play mechanics of the original and put it into a true 3D view. My son plays Myth III all the time. Sometimes I worry about him.

At the Australian Game Developers Conference, Gamespot Australia talked with Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, about Return to Castle Wolfenstein, id's upcoming Doom III, and various other topics.
Here' s an excerpt from this newly-posted interview:
GS: Could you just outline for us what each company did, individually?For the full interview, head down under via the link below.
Activision: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
TH: Sure. The game is being developed by Gray Matter, the creative director there is Drew Markham, so he's really the creative vision behind the game. And that's on the single player portion of the game. The multi player piece of the game is being developed by Nerve Software who is a group of experienced guys from, one time some of them were at Rogue Software, some of them were at Ion Storm, and even id Software - Brandon James, who developed Q3DM17 The Longest Yard, is a president of the company. So they had experience with the technology, were experienced and were basically ready to go. And knew a lot about multiplayer game experiences as well. So we got them to do the multiplayer piece which allowed Gray Matter, and is allowing Gray Matter to devote all of their efforts and their focus on making the best single player game ever. Whereas Nerve is devoting all their efforts on making a compelling multiplayer component that is something different and uniquely Wolfenstein. Our role in the process is basically to coordinate and direct between the two companies and provide assist wherever we can, and we have devoted tons of resources to the games. Everything from test-playing levels and providing feedback, to design input on the game, coordination between the multiplayer and the single-player component of it. Assisting in the design. Of both of those aspects of the game and even providing things like programming assistance and technical assistance on implementing all the new technology that we have incorporated into the games.
GS: With the Wolfenstein licence being a property of id, do you have a certain amount of creative control over the new projects?
TH: Oh yeah. Absolutely. We have complete quality control, creative control over everything. And we wouldn't have allowed the game to be developed by an outside developer in this certain situation unless we had complete control -- to make sure that the game when it's done is worthy of the Wolfenstein name, and that it's really an id game that's a partnership in development with us and Gray Matter and Nerve, and even Activision as the producer and distributor for the title.

Harpoon3 Docs & Updates

This week brings a manual, a tutorial, and a cosmetic update under Mac OS X to players of Harpoon3, the critically-acclaimed real-time naval warfare simulation by Jesse Spears:
A dedicated Harpooner actually read the updated FAQ page (quite a shock ;-), and offered to do a little work on the manual for me... Marcus's reward is below in the OS X section.Both the manual and the tutorial are Adobe PDF files.
All that Marcus wanted in return for his help was "outlines for the windows in the OS X version". Those of you that have tried out the Beta OS X version know what he's talking about...document windows under OS X don't have any borders. The map backgrounds are all the same color, so the windows blend together and it can be very easy to get confused when any of them overlap.Follow the links below to download the documentation and OS X patch, and if you haven't yet taken Harpoon3 out for a trial run, download the demo from Macgamefiles.com.

The patch... fixes this. There is now a light grey border around the Map area of the windows.
While I was making that small fix, I decide to do something about the "ugly button outlines" (as another user described them). I believe I got them all, and some of the default buttons should even glow like good Aqua buttons are supposed to.
IMG Reviews Giants: Citizen Kabuto

IMG has posted a review of one of the most graphically intense games ever created, Giants: Citizen Kabuto by MacPlay. Having the honor of being the first Mac OS X-only game, Giants is an action-packed strategy game that includes classic RTS elements like base building and resource management as well as intense third-person action.
Here's a snippet from Eddie Park's review of Giants: Citizen Kabuto:
This game is flush with humor. The Meccs cut-scenes in particular had me rolling the whole time, with line after line of witty banter rolling from their mouths the whole time. The interactions between the various characters and the Smarties are also quite funny, particularly the ones between Delphi and Zan, the Samurai Smartie. Watch for some Star Wars homages in the cut-scenes as well.If you have a blazingly fast machine with a GeForce 3 card, this is one game you can't be without. IMG Review - Giants: Citizen Kabuto
The missions themselves, for the most part, are quite well-balanced, though they tend to slant towards the easy side. I rarely had to go through a mission more than once, though there were a couple of times when I would be forced to restart a mission, which can be done at any time. The objectives themselves tend to vary, and include everything from rescuing hostages to blowing up an objective. The least exciting missions centered around base building, which basically consisted of gathering Smarties and giving them food in order to motivate them into building things. These missions had a definite tutorial flavor to them, and I suspect were put in place mainly to educate the player on base building techniques. However, the Mac version of Giants has yet to see multiplayer, which should be released in a patch by MacPlay sometime in the future.

Moon Lander 1.1 Released

A new version of the excellent shareware title Moon Lander was released recently, bringing the game to version 1.1 and making a number of changes. This surprise hit from the German-based OnlyMac Software is garnering great reviews so far and a good number of downloads on Macgamefiles.com.
Moon Lander is a 3D adaptation of the arcade classic Lunar Lander and maintains the original's easy-to-pick-up gameplay while adding impressive 3D graphics and even a story line. Version 1.1 makes some minor improvements to the original. Here is a full list of the changes:
- Easy modus is easier now
- Engine performance improved (5% faster)
- Bug in unregistered version fixed
- Itīs no longer possible to land below a base
- Few minor bugs fixed
- Better English translation
If you haven't already, be sure to head over to Macgamefiles to download the latest demo of Moon Lander now. The demo needs a G3 with at least 8 MB of VRAM and will run on Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X. The full version, which includes 20 levels, costs $25 and is available for purchase online.

Emu Updates Abound

Richard Bannister, programmer on an amazing number of emulator projects, has recently updated 17 of his applications. The reason for the update is to fix a recently found bug that the programs were having with multiprocessor Macs. In some instances on MP machines, memory was getting corrupted by the generic video layer. This was causing crashes, so be sure to re-download your favorite emulators.
Seven of the programs, including the popular Boycott and Boycott Advance, also received other updates in this latest round. Here's a complete list of the applications affected:
Note that these releases have no other changes other than the MP bug fix.Head over to Bannister's site for specific emulator pages and to grab your new versions now.

Aleph One Call for Voodoo Help

Yesterday, the web site of the Marathon Open Source project was updated with the welcome news that they are turning their attention to the longstanding issue of support for 3dfx Voodoo cards in Aleph One:
Loren Petrich has sent out a call for programmers knowledgeable in the area of 3dfx Voodoo graphics programming. Aleph One has long had issues with 3dfx's old graphics cards, and it would be great to have someone come along and get Aleph One to work as well with these cards as with ATI and Nvidia's offerings.Aleph One boasts an impressive variety of improvements over Bungie's venerable Marathon 2 engine (upon which it is based), including high-resolution, 32-bit textures; support for 3D models; and OpenGL acceleration. While this reporter can attest that GL-accelerated Aleph One running on an ATI Radeon is a breathtaking sight, on a 3dfx Voodoo3 it suffers from some serious problems.

MacGamer Reviews Aliens vs Predator

Our friends at MacGamer.com have been laying on the game reviews. Yesterday they posted a review by Dave Peck of Aliens vs Predator, the long-awaited first-person shooter from MacPlay that traces its origins back to a version for the venerable Atari Jaguar.
I've played many tense games and AvP is the scariest game I've ever survived. It's the only game I've gotten a sore neck along with bug dreams. Even in the Training Mode, AvP will kick your arse if you're not careful. And as a reviewer, I've never worked so hard coming up with descent screen shots. Your dead before you can even hit the button! As a Marine solo player, you find yourself on the tail end of an evacuation working your way from the research complex planetside to orbital, fighting aliens all the way.Head over to MacGamer for the full review and a batch of screen shots.
