What?, don't they know who we are?
Illinois Web Design July 31 - 10:01 AM

Thanks. I hope other people test it too. http://www.phind.net/ecommerce/illinois-web-design.html

dissapointed
Knio March 13 - 12:42 PM

i get 15-25 fps playing onslaught...
on a dual P4 2.4ghz, 512 mb system ram, sapphire radeon 9600 XT with 256 mb video ram..

Imagine...
Nick February 23 - 8:27 AM

...if this wasn't an in-house job, but the the usual after the though conversion, it would be -even- slower than Lith-Tech based games.

Nasty.

What a shame...
CrazyIvan February 23 - 7:15 AM

...A 933mhz QuickSilver/GeForce 4Ti is my main rig. I run UT2003 with the settings quite high (close to max on everything) and it glides along beautifully. But UT2004 has been a big disappointment! Just look at this forum. Why are we, the end-users, forced to look for optimizations??? I must add that I can run Halo (which has far better physics) extremely smoothly. It's what I will stick with if the final release of UT2004 continues to disappoint. Truly a shame!

SilverSunStreak February 22 - 2:22 PM

I'm getting a smooth framerate, has to be above 30, on indoor levels wiht my dual867 and geforce 4mx(32). All settings are medium to high. Outdoor levels with vehicles are another story though.

cheb712 February 21 - 3:10 PM

The ("usesound=False" in the GameEngine section of the UT2004.ini file) REALLY works. Stinks not having sound but now the demo is very playable on my 800 g4. Settings are all on low and all the speech to text/online chat stuff is off. 16-30fps on onslaught map. :-D

Sound hog
Johan Hansén February 21 - 1:24 PM

On single CPU machines, turning the sound off increases the performance with close to 100%. We've tested it on several machines now, including dual machines with one processor turned off. On all machines the performance goes up to the double when sound is off. On dual machines it's hardly noticed. See the lower half of this topic and forward for the testing of it: http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13856&start=105

Johan Hansén the version in Unreal 2004 already is the latests and fastest.
and on what assumption do you base that half of the CPU is doing audio ??

unreal tournament has always been a CPU hog.
on the mac and the PC.

Re: Sound Optimization
Johan Hansén February 21 - 9:31 AM

The previous sound optimizations from UT2k3 are as far as I know in the demo. Replacing the dylib with the one from UT2k3 or one built from Ryan's OpenAL page does nothing. Now there is something that makes the sound drag down the performance to the half on single CPU machines, but it is not the OpenAL file.

cheb712 February 20 - 11:34 PM

I can elaborate. UT2k3 gets better framerate.. It depends on the map. 40fps is average. Faster if indoors. BUT outdoor maps get about 30-40.
UT2k4 on the other hand I notice a HUGE range. On the DM map I get between 30-125 fps. Depends on which way I'm looking. Torkin (onslaught) is the one with the low frame rates. I haven't tested all the machines and all the maps. I did try it with one bot on onslaught and I got 40-50 fps. This was all on my dual 1.4/9700. Settings were all 'normal' and all check boxes were off except foliage( 1900x1200 (cinema23) 32bit). Then I used default map setting and the fps plummetted. The sp 800mhz G4 was running 16. My friend with a TiBook 1ghz also ran UT tonight (torlan default game settings and LOW graphics and was getting 9fps) We didn't try the DM maps because there really wasn't a point. We can play 2k3 for that. 2k4 is great for onslaught and assault and that is what we were hoping to play. Can't see that It is a unique thing to just my machine since I tried it on several. Must be the map or bots?. Halo runs real well on my machine but that game doesn't run bots. I'm not disappointed in the game on my machine but if I cant get together on a friday night with my friends (local not online) and play a game then I dont' see me buying the game. Hope a performance patch comes out soon.
Oh, I am running the latest mac os 10.3.2 and I have 2GB of ram. I'm not gonna give up because this game is great. I'll keep trying different settings or something.

Still slow graphics
Sol February 20 - 9:46 PM

On my Dual 800MHz with nVidia Twinview the update made no difference in frame-rate. The UT2003 demo runs smoothly and I do not understand why the UT2004 demo would not.

actually
garymm February 20 - 9:07 PM

actually, cheb712 has a dual proc machine. He must have settings on max and/or be experiencing something weird, because those framerates are way too low. I wouldn't suggest a purchasing decision on this anomoly alone. How did Ut2003 run? Is everything on max (settings)?

It runs sorta playably on my PBook 800MHz, fine on my G4 1GHz/Radeon 9000 64MB. I'm hoping the full version will be as fast as Ut2003, but it's really fun as it is.

The link is below the story. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Sound optimisations missing from demo
Tom February 20 - 5:33 PM

The sound optimisations are missing from the demo so all single processor people will see frame rates halfed (i.e. you & me cheb712!) The 2nd processor on the Dual machines takes care of the audio giving a 40 - 50 % increase in speed.
The full game will have much better frame rates if they include the optimisations seen in UT2K3.

Link?
Rob February 20 - 5:30 PM

How about a link...I'm having trouble finding the patch.

that is indeed weird
mark February 20 - 5:21 PM

that is indeed weird cheb712
because i get an average framerate of 30 to 40 on my Dual 867Mhz with a radeon 8500

alphaone February 20 - 4:34 PM

That's odd. I get ~20 fps on my Dual 867 w/GeForce 4mx (32MB) on medium settings.

cheb712 February 20 - 3:57 PM

GUI works better. Performance is still too low 18-20fps on my dual 1.4/ATI 9700. 7-8fps on my 800mhz g4/ATI 8500. TiBook 1Ghz/64mb vid is getting 8-9 fps. Guess I won't be buying this game.

alphaone February 20 - 3:28 PM

Great! It feels much better now.
