Why does everything applewise have to delay everything until a stupid macworld or their anniversarys?!! Just Make the 1.03 Patch and release it Damnit! Now my friend can't play at Lan Parties because his dual 1.02 (867 overclocked) is running 1.02, I don't know how Macsoft does their stuff, but GearBox doesn't take their sweet time fixing the multiplayer problems. |

You don't calculate MHz that way.
450+450=NOT 900Mhz
450+450=a 450mhz chip with a turbo on it's back.
but only games that use the Quake 3 engine have full SMP support.
no matter what game it is.
Halo is not SMP optimized |

I had just received my copy of Halo and installed it on my "windtunnel" Dual 1ghz G4 (over 1gb RAM, 64mb video card - not sure of the brand), and the intro movies play fine up until the menu screen. Everything goes black, the music loops on 2 second intervals, and the system completely locks up. I thought it might be the game, so I installed it on my bro's G4 iMac and it runs fine.
Is anyone else with a Dual G4 having the same problem? How do I fix it? I tried running it in Windowed Mode and it didn't change anything. I'm not enjoying force-restarting my system :( |

I'm gonna have to see a demo of this game run on my Mac before I can even think about buying it. Anybody know if there's a demo in the works of this game? |

Play with the startup preferences. You probably have FSAA turned on. Turning that off solved the red screen issue for me. |

after playing this game for a couple of days now I must say this is the best game on the mac platform yet.
The Mac OS X 10.3.2 update will have updated ATI and NVIDA drivers will will resolve the NO FSAA support on any card.
I tried enabling it when I first installed the game on two machines...
On my PowerMac dual 1.25 FW800-2GB RAM w/NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4600 the game is not even visible, the whole screen is completely red.
On My PowerBook 15" Aluminum w/512 MB RAM and ATI Mobility 9600 w/64 MB RAM-with FSAA enabled the game is visible and I can get through the time demo, the graphics are littered with atrifacts 90% of the time.
On another note, the game unexpectedly quits quite frequently and you can only save at certain checkpoints in single player mode so it makes advancing quite tedious.
Other than that It still rules, the gamely is the most exciting with tons of action happening all around you all the time, lots of unexpected explosions and debris flying. Awesome.
I'm sure that the release of the 1.03 update will coincide with the 10.3.2 release which wil hopefully be soon. |

Halo is a GPU bound game, which means that it actually taxes the graphics card and AGP bus more so than the CPU. I have some friends on-line who have been playing Halo (alsas, it still hasn't arrived in Australia yet!) on a Dual 1.8 G5/9600 Pro and a PB 17" 1.33 GHz/9600 M and they have reported similar framreates at resolutions higher than minimum with details set to medium., on bothe SP and MP. This is as good a machine as any Mac at this time, to play Halo on! |
| Sure it can... |

In fact, it COULD run Halo brilliantly.
Unfortunately, we have to make do with a third hand port :-/ Which is a different bag of chips altogether. I would wait for a demo to show up.
And Lucian, about five of these comments are actually related to this story, but I don't see you deleting all of the others. |

I have a new powerbook 17" 1.33ghz G4 with 1 gig of ram. It has a 64mb ATI Radeon 9600. Is this setup powerful enought to run Halo? I won't buy Halo if all I can do is run it at its lowest graphics settings. |

At lowest settings, of course. There are a few rough patches (one part is particularly bad) and I haven't finished the solo game nor have I tried multi, but, largely, it is very playable. YMMV, caveat emptor, try at your own risk, etc. |

Just got mine from the Apple store here in Dallas. They only got 5 in today and I was the only person that didn't work there that got the game. The other 4 where already sold to employees.
Installing now, will let you guys know how well it plays on a 867 G4. |

When you have dual CPUs, this does not mean that you have twice as many megahertz. You can have an effective speed faster than the megahertz of 450MHz IF (and only if) the process is optimised for SMP, this speed boost will not be anything like twice the speed, however.
So in other words, the game will probably run with your CPU but will do so extremely slowly, probably to the point of unplayability. You should look at a CPU upgrade or a new tower. |

I've got a Dual G4 450, would that suffice? My thinking is that 450 + 450 = 900 is 100 Mhz over the minimum, any body know?
Thanks |

| a2daj |
| Gromit |
December 12 - 4:25 PM |

I assume you meant to say "Halo is NOT CPU bound."
Anyway, that is cold comfort to those of us whose Dual CPU's fall below the minimum 800 MHz. :P |
| a2daj |
December 12 - 3:59 PM |
|
Halo is CPU bound, so SMP support isn't going to help much if at all.
On the PC anything above 1024x768 runs lousy too, even those with high end systems.
Halo is doing things in OpenGL that no other game has done. It is GPU limited, so that's also going to depend on the drivers. Since much of the stuff hasn't been done before then there's a chance there are some driver optimizations that can be done to the previously unused portions of the OpenGL API. |
| No FSAA |
| Jim |
December 12 - 3:45 PM |
|
I almost forgot too... FSAA doesn't work properly. Of course, Bungie blames ATI, not themselves. Lame.
And if you read the review here, it performs lousy on a dual G5 2 Ghz w/ Radeon 9800 at any resolution above 1024 x 768.
Definitely waiting on this one. |
| Waiting for features |
| Jim |
December 12 - 3:37 PM |

I think I'm going to sit on the sideline until I hear about key features being implemented in a patch -- namely SMP support. Otherwise, Halo will probably run like a dog on my "meager G4 dual 1.25"
Do you hear me Bungie? No SMP, no sale. |

Which CompUSA? If it's a Seattle area CompUSA, hell would have to freeze over before they got a Mac game the day after, or even 4 business days after it shipped. |

Apple guy up at compusa says he thinks the game will be in today so sorry all you preorder guys. I just don't like to mail order games. I could be home all day and step out to go take the trash out or to go check on my laundry and thats when they show up. Stupid fedex
Sorry if this is a plug for them and not IMG and I would not be surprised if my post gets moderated. |
